Your First Website Widget Stream

Learning Statement: In this article you’ll set up your first website widget to gather feedback directly from your online visitors. By the end of this article your Widget will be live and people will be able to respond in real time.
Audience: This article is aimed at all OMBEA Website Widget users.

Introduction

Adding a Website Widget is a two-part process.

  1. First you will add some special code to parts of your own website. This code calls up the Website Widget.

  2. Then you will create a Stream which tells the Website Widget what questions to ask and when.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have decided what questions you will ask with your Website Widget.
  • Make sure you have a Touchpoint for the web address where this Widget will appear. This will usually already be set up for you.
  • Make sure you have admin access to edit the code on your own website, where you will be adding these widgets.

If you haven’t already done so, use our Goal Planner to figure out the questions you will ask (and more). The planner is based on our years of experience in how to benefit from the feedback you’ll gather.

Steps

Part 1: Add the Website Widget code to your website.

  1. From the menu on the left-hand side, click Touchpoints.
  2. Select the Website and click Edit.
  3. On the Installation panel, you will see instructions to add the necessary code to your website. Follow these steps.
  4. To change where and how the widget will appear on your website, click Touchpoints. Click the edit button for the widget you would like to change, select your options, and click Save.

If you would like to embed the widget instead of showing it as popup, select Manually under Choose the position. Specify the placement of the widget by placing a div tag with id=”ombea-widget-container” at the appropriate place in your code.

If you need to create or edit your Touchpoint first, see this article.

If you are using a website builder such as Squarespace or Wix, you will need to refer to their instructions for inserting custom code into your website Header and Body sections. A good search term to find these instructions is ‘Squarespace Code Injection’ (or similar).

Part 2: Create the Stream

  1. Visit https://insights.ombea.com/ and log in with your Insights username and password.
  2. From the menu on the left-hand side, click Streams.
  3. Click on the + symbol in the blue circle.
  4. Click Create beneath Website Widget.
  5. Click on ADD NEW BLOCK.
  6. Select the question type and add the details you are prompted for. To add further questions, click on ADD NEW BLOCK and repeat as necessary.
  7. Choose what happens after the last question. You can choose to either send participants to a specific webpage, or to display a message.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Give your Stream a name so you can identify it in your dashboard.
  10. Schedule your Widget’s start and end dates. This can be for now or at a specific time in the future.
  11. Choose one or more Touchpoints to display the Widget.
  12. Decide if you would like to prompt the visitor for the same feedback again.
  13. Click Save.

You can add logical branching to your stream. This means the questions can go in different directions depending on the responses given. To learn more, see Link Stream Branching.

If you change your Stream, there is no need to re-add the widget code snippet to your website.

For Smiley questions, you will need to choose an Index. The Index you choose will determine how OMBEA will summarize your feedback. For help making the right choice, see our article on Satisfaction Indexes.

Congratulations!

Your Widget is now ready! Depending on the start and end times you defined, you can access it by visiting the web address you chose to publish it on. The results will appear in your dashboard which you can access using the links on the left-hand side of the Insights platform.
